THE HISTORY OF
Established in 1997, the Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia represents an important chapter in the history and development of the concierge profession in Malaysia.
From its early beginnings under the founding leadership of Mr. Timothy Gan, the Society has continued to grow through the dedication, leadership, and contributions of generations of Malaysian concierges.
Over the years, the Society has been guided by Datuk Roslan Mat Taba, Mr. Ragu Kumarasamy, and Mr. Narain Rao Balaraman, each contributing to its continued growth and development within the hospitality industry and the international Les Clefs d'Or community.
Today, the Society continues to uphold the values, traditions, professionalism, and spirit of service that define Les Clefs d'Or, while carrying forward the legacy of the Golden Keys for future generations.

Mr. Timothy Gan holds a distinguished place in the history of Les Clefs d’Or Malaysia as one of the founding pioneers and the first President of the Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia. 59th UICH International Congress
The Congress provided an important platform for members to exchange knowledge, share experiences and strengthen professional relationships across national sections. It also highlighted the importance of nurturing the next generation of concierge professionals through initiatives such as the Andy Pongco Award, recognising emerging talent and excellence within the profession.
Beyond its formal programmes, the London Congress reflected the enduring spirit of Les Clefs d’Or, a global network united by service, hospitality and professional camaraderie. It remains part of the organisation’s rich international history, connecting concierges across borders while upholding the highest standards of personalised guest service.
2012

The 59th UICH International Congress was held in London, United Kingdom, in 2012, bringing together Les Clefs d’Or concierges from across the globe. Hosted at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, the Congress celebrated the spirit of international friendship, professional excellence and the shared values of the concierge profession.



The Journey To Kuala Lumpur
The presentation marked a significant moment for the Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia, as Kuala Lumpur was set to welcome the UICH flag and the global Les Clefs d’Or community. It represented not only Malaysia’s ambition to host the Congress, but also the dedication of its members in strengthening the country’s presence within the international concierge community.
This journey would culminate in January 2014, when Kuala Lumpur proudly hosted the 61st UICH International Congress, welcoming concierges from around the world and marking a historic milestone for Les Clefs d’Or Malaysia.
2012

During the 59th UICH International Congress in London, Malaysia took an important step towards bringing the international concierge community to Kuala Lumpur. President Mr. K. Ragu presented Kuala Lumpur’s bid to the UICH General Assembly, showcasing Malaysia’s vision and commitment to hosting the prestigious International Congress.

During this period, the Society was also preparing for one of the most significant milestones in its history, bringing the prestigious UICH Les Clefs d’Or International Congress to Kuala Lumpur in 2014. The successful bid, initiated by the Society and supported by key industry partners, placed Malaysia firmly on the international concierge map.

A feature published by New Straits Times highlighting the growing presence and recognition of the Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia within the hospitality industry. The article captured a significant period in the development of the Malaysian concierge profession, as local concierges continued to uphold the values of professionalism, service excellence and camaraderie represented by the Golden Keys.

Pre-Event Launch for the 2014 UICH International Congress in Kuala Lumpur was a success! Our heartiest appreciation to Dato' Mirza, the Director General of Tourism Malaysia for officiating the launch and unveiling the official 2014 Congress logo (which will be shared soon) in the presence of over 130 attendees comprising of hotel GMs, friends of our industry, press and not to forget our Les Clefs d'or friends from Singapore and Indonesia who made the trip over to show support. A big thank you also goes to our dear UICH International President, Virginia Casale and 2nd VP Colin Toomey for your presence and support!

Road To 61th International Congress
Malaysia successfully secured the hosting rights for the 61st Les Clefs d'Or International Congress through a series of key milestones, beginning with its official bid in 2010, followed by the successful selection as host nation, the announcement of Kuala Lumpur as the host city, and the official launch ceremony leading up to the 2014 Congress.

Official launch of Malaysia's hosting of the 61st UICH (Les Clefs d'Or) International Congress, officiated by Datuk Mirza Mohammad Taiyab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, together with Ragu Kumarasamy (President of the Society of Golden Keys Malaysia), Virginia Casale (International President of Les Clefs d'Or UICH), Colin Toomey (Second International Vice President of Les Clefs d'Or UICH), and Zulkefli Sharif (Chief Executive Officer of MyCEB). The event marked a historic milestone for the Society of Golden Keys Malaysia and Malaysia's international hospitality industry.
60th UICH International Congress
The Congress offered members an opportunity to exchange knowledge, strengthen international connections and experience New Zealand’s unique culture and renowned hospitality, creating lasting memories beyond the formal programmes.

The 60th UICH International Congress was held in Queenstown, New Zealand, in 2013, bringing together more than 300 Les Clefs d’Or concierges from around the world to celebrate six decades of professional excellence, friendship and international camaraderie.



8th UICH Asian Congress
The 2013 Bangkok Congress reflected the growing strength and unity of Les Clefs d’Or across Asia, highlighting the importance of collaboration, fellowship and international networking among concierge professionals. It remains a meaningful chapter in the continuing journey of the Asian concierge community.

Held in Bangkok, Thailand from 21–24 August 2013, the 8th UICH Asian Congress brought together concierge professionals from across Asia under the theme “A Look at Asia; The Power of Connectivity and Solidarity.” Hosted by Les Clefs d’Or Thailand, the congress welcomed approximately 265 delegates representing 20 countries, strengthening the spirit of friendship and professional unity across the region.

Ragu Kumarasamy
Following the successful hosting of the 61st UICH (Les Clefs d'Or) International Congress, the Society of Golden Keys Malaysia entered a new chapter with the re-election of Ragu Kumarasamy as President for a fourth consecutive term. The announcement also marked the appointment of the 2014–2016 Executive Committee, the induction of new members, and the promotion of several members to Full Keys status.
These milestones reflected the Society's continued growth, strong leadership, and unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, service excellence, and fellowship within Malaysia's concierge community.

The Malaysian Hotel Concierge Lapel Pin was introduced as a symbol of professionalism, dedication, and service excellence within Malaysia's concierge community. Awarded exclusively to experienced hotel concierges who meet the Society's stringent eligibility criteria, the lapel pin recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the hospitality profession.

During its official launch, 20 distinguished concierges were honoured as the inaugural recipients of the Malaysian Hotel Concierge Lapel Pin. As recipients, they were formally recognised by the Society of Golden Keys Malaysia (Les Clefs d'Or Malaysia) for their exemplary service and contribution to the industry.
The introduction of the Malaysian Hotel Concierge Lapel Pin marked a significant milestone in elevating the standards of the concierge profession in Malaysia, while reinforcing the country's growing presence within the global Les Clefs d'Or network.
63th UICH International Congress
With Dubai as its spectacular backdrop, delegates experienced the city’s world-class hospitality and dynamic tourism landscape. The congress featured major gatherings at the Armani Hotel Dubai and JW Marriott Marquis, culminating in a memorable Closing Gala at Atlantis, The Palm.
The Dubai Congress marked an important milestone for Les Clefs d’Or UAE and reflected the continued growth of the international concierge community. More than a professional gathering, it embodied the enduring spirit of In Service Through Friendship — connecting concierges from around the world through shared knowledge, excellence and friendship.

The 63rd UICH International Congress was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 10–15 April 2016, hosted by Les Clefs d’Or UAE under the theme “The Future is Here.” The congress brought together concierge professionals from around the world for a landmark gathering of education, professional exchange, networking and friendship.



Annual General Meeting
Heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected Executive Committee for the 2016–2018 term. Their appointment marked a new chapter of leadership, bringing fresh energy and commitment towards strengthening the Society and its members.

Against the historic and vibrant backdrop of Berlin, delegates experienced the city’s rich culture, heritage and renowned hospitality. More than a gathering of professionals, Berlin 2017 reflected the enduring spirit of In Service Through Friendship, connecting concierges across borders while continuing to uphold the traditions, values and excellence of Les Clefs d’Or.

The 64th UICH International Congress was held in Berlin, Germany, from 23–28 March 2017, bringing together Les Clefs d’Or members from around the world for a week of professional exchange, friendship and international collaboration. Hosted by Les Clefs d’Or Germany, the congress celebrated the growing global community of professional concierges.



Annual General Meeting
The AGM served as an important platform for members to discuss the Society’s affairs, strengthen professional relationships, and uphold the spirit of fellowship that has always been at the heart of the concierge profession.
2017 was also a significant year for Les Clefs d’Or internationally, as the association reached a milestone of 4,000 members across more than 80 countries and six continents. For Les Clefs d’Or Malaysia, the journey continued with the same commitment to professional excellence, friendship and service.

10th UICH Asian Congress
From the vibrant hospitality of Mumbai to memorable gatherings at iconic properties including The Taj Mahal Palace and Sofitel Mumbai BKC, the congress showcased India’s rich culture, tourism and legendary spirit of hospitality.
More than a congress, Mumbai 2017 represented the very essence of In Service Through Friendship, strengthening international relationships, celebrating the concierge profession and creating memories that continue to connect Les Clefs d’Or members across borders.

The 10th UICH Asian Congress was held in Mumbai, India, in September 2017, bringing together Les Clefs d’Or members and concierge professionals from across Asia and beyond. Hosted by Les Clefs d’Or India, the congress provided a platform for friendship, professional exchange and the sharing of knowledge within the international concierge community.


65th UICH International Congress
Throughout the congress, delegates took part in educational sessions, cultural experiences and professional discussions focusing on the future of the concierge profession and the evolving world of hospitality. Among the highlights was the Les Clefs d’Or Award 2018, honouring the legacy of André Damonte and celebrating the achievements and potential of young concierge professionals.
Beyond the meetings and programmes, Seoul 2018 reflected the true spirit of Les Clefs d’Or service, friendship and international unity. It was a memorable gathering that strengthened connections between concierge professionals across borders while celebrating the continued growth and evolution of the profession.

The 65th UICH International Congress brought together Les Clefs d’Or concierge professionals from around the world in Seoul, South Korea, from 5–10 April 2018. Hosted by Les Clefs d’Or Korea, the congress embraced the theme “Golden Opportunities”, creating a platform for international networking, professional exchange and the sharing of knowledge within the global concierge community.



Annual General Meeting
The AGM provided an opportunity for members to come together, review the Society’s progress, discuss matters concerning the organisation, and strengthen the bonds of friendship and professionalism that continue to define Les Clefs d’Or Malaysia.

66th UICH International Congress
The congress featured a First-Timers Workshop, CSR discussions, educational sessions and the General Assembly, alongside opportunities for delegates to strengthen international friendships and share knowledge. One of the highlights was the Les Clefs d’Or Award 2019, honouring the legacy of Pierre Quentin, which was won by Raphaëlle Grandgirard of Mandarin Oriental Geneva, Switzerland.
Cannes held a particularly significant place in Les Clefs d’Or history. It was the birthplace of the organisation’s first International Congress in 1952, when representatives from nine nations came together to establish the international association. Returning to Cannes in 2019, 67 years later, made the 66th Congress a celebration not only of the present and future of the concierge profession, but also of the heritage and friendships that have shaped Les Clefs d’Or for generations.
2019
Held from 22–27 March 2019, the 66th UICH International Congress brought more than 500 Les Clefs d’Or members from around the world to Cannes, France. Under the theme “#YesWeCannes”, delegates gathered for a memorable programme of networking, education, professional exchange and cultural experiences along the beautiful Côte d’Azur.



Annual General Meeting
Despite the global disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia successfully held its Annual General Meeting at EQ Kuala Lumpur. The gathering marked an important milestone in maintaining the Society's governance, strengthening member engagement, and reaffirming its dedication to excellence, professionalism, and the continued development of Malaysia's concierge community.

Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Society of Golden Keys Malaysia entered a new era focused on rebuilding, innovation, and professional development. In 2021, the Society resumed its Annual General Meeting and reconnected members nationwide while introducing constitutional enhancements to strengthen its future direction.

67th UICH International Congress
Les Clefs d'Or Malaysia proudly participated in the 67th UICH Les Clefs d'Or International Congress held in Istanbul, Türkiye, from 10–15 March 2023. The Malaysian delegation was represented by Vice President Sharezal Abdul Wahid, Assistant Secretary Narain Rao, and Public Relations Officer Muhendra Reddy.
The international congress welcomed nearly 480 Les Clefs d'Or concierges from around the world for a week of professional development, educational sessions, networking, and the UICH General Assembly.

A proud milestone for Malaysia was the re-election of Sharezal Abdul Wahid as Assistant General Secretary of UICH Les Clefs d'Or International, reaffirming Malaysia's continued contribution to the global concierge community.
During the General Assembly, Narain Rao and Muhendra Reddy also presented and promoted the upcoming 12th Asian Les Clefs d'Or Congress, inviting delegates worldwide to gather in Langkawi, Malaysia, later that year.
The Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia extends its appreciation to Les Clefs d'Or Turkey for hosting a successful and memorable international congress, further strengthening friendship and collaboration among concierge professionals worldwide.

The Annual General Meeting 2023 of the Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia was held at Mövenpick Hotel & Convention Centre KLIA on 25 July 2023, bringing together members of the Society for another meaningful gathering.

12th UICH Asian Congress
In September 2023, the Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia proudly hosted the 12th Asian Les Clefs d'Or Congress in Langkawi, Malaysia, welcoming 190 concierge professionals and hospitality leaders from across Asia, Europe, and the United States.
The congress served as a platform for professional development, networking, and strengthening international collaboration within the global concierge community. It also showcased Malaysia's renowned hospitality and reinforced Langkawi's reputation as a premier destination for international MICE and tourism events.

The Society extends its sincere appreciation to the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) for its valuable support in making the congress a memorable success. The event marked another significant milestone for Malaysia following the successful hosting of the 61st UICH International Congress in Kuala Lumpur in 2014, further strengthening the country's standing within the global Les Clefs d'Or family.

68th UICH International Congress
From 24–28 April 2024, Les Clefs d'Or Malaysia proudly participated in the 68th International Congress of Les Clefs d'Or in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, joining concierge professionals from around the world for five inspiring days dedicated to learning, collaboration, networking, and cultural exchange.

Taylor University
A new era begins with our Concierge Certification Program in collaboration with Taylor's University.
On 11th July 2024, a milestone was reached with our inaugural training session and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
During the MOU signing, Taylor's University and Society Of The Golden Keys Malaysia formalized their agreement. Prof. Dr. Neethiananthan Ari Ragavan, Executive Dean of Taylor's University, signed the MOU, witnessed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Joaquim Dias Soeiro, Head of School. Mr. Narain Rao, President of Society Of The Golden Keys Malaysia, signed on behalf of the Society, witnessed by Mr. Sharezal Abdul Wahid, Vice President.

Taylor University
The Junior Concierge Skills Training Program once again empowered Bachelor of Hospitality Management students with valuable insights and practical knowledge about the vital role of a concierge and the services they provide. Held on the 4th December 2024, the program welcomed 214 students enrolled in the Accommodation Management module to engage in an interactive and enriching learning experience.

The program featured two key sessions. Session 1 focused on the fundamentals of concierge services, highlighting essential topics such as customer service excellence, local knowledge acquisition, and effective networking. These foundational skills are critical for delivering outstanding service and building meaningful professional connections within the hospitality industry.
Session 2, scheduled for the next phase of the program, will delve into problem-solving techniques and real-world applications, ensuring students gain a comprehensive understanding of the concierge role and its practical implications.
Led by seasoned industry experts and certified trainers, the program marked a significant milestone in preparing the next generation of hospitality professionals.
69th UICH International Congress
Our President, Mr. Narain Rao and Vice President Mr. Sharezal Wahid, who also serves as the Assistant Secretary for UICH, are representing us, at the 69th UICH International Congress in Madrid, an international gathering for the concierge community.

The 16th Annual General Meeting of Les Clefs d’Or Malaysia was held at Renaissance Hotel Kuala Lumpur, bringing together members, the Executive Committee and distinguished guests for an afternoon of fellowship and professional exchange.

The AGM was officially opened by President Mr. Narain Rao, with a warm welcome from Ms. Rose Hew. A key highlight was the presentation of National Honorary Membership to Mr. Prasath Kanagaras (PK), welcoming him into the Society of the Golden Keys Malaysia.
The gathering also featured insightful sessions by Ms. Jchanet Tan on “Professional vs Personal Concierge” and Mr. Prasath Kanagaras on “What is Your Concierge Brand?”, providing valuable perspectives for the future of the concierge profession.

In October 2025, Les Clefs d’Or Malaysia travelled to Boracay, Philippines, for the 13th UICH Asian Congress, a gathering that brought together concierge professionals from across the Asian region.

With the theme “LAKBAY • TUNGHAY • UGNAY” — Journey • Witness • Connect, the congress celebrated the exchange of knowledge, culture and friendships among members while showcasing the unique hospitality of the Philippines.
For Les Clefs d’Or Malaysia, Boracay 2025 was another opportunity to strengthen regional connections, share our Malaysian hospitality and be part of the continuing journey of the Asian concierge community.
